Tarangire National Park, located in northern Tanzania’s Manyara Region, is renowned for having one of the highest concentrations of elephants in Africa — and is one of East Africa Sauvage’s favorite hidden gems on the Northern Safari Circuit. Spanning approximately 2,850 square kilometers (1,100 square miles), the park is defined by its rolling savannah, ancient baobab trees, and the life-giving Tarangire River.

Tarangire is best known for its elephants: during the dry season, herds numbering in the hundreds gather along the riverbanks to drink and bathe, offering some of the most reliable and intimate elephant encounters anywhere in Tanzania. The park’s skyline is punctuated by towering baobab trees, often over a thousand years old, which have become an iconic symbol of the landscape.

Beyond its elephants, Tarangire is home to lions, leopards, and buffalo, along with giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, and antelope species such as the greater kudu and eland. It’s also considered one of East Africa’s finest birding destinations, with over 550 species recorded, including numerous raptors and migratory birds during the wet season.
