Arusha National Park, just a short drive from Arusha town, is a compact but remarkably diverse park — and one of East Africa Sauvage’s favorite easy-access adventures on the Northern Safari Circuit. Covering approximately 552 square kilometers (213 square miles), the park is dominated by Mount Meru and spans three distinct landscapes: montane forest, open savannah, and alpine moorland.

Rising to 4,566 meters, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and forms a dramatic backdrop to the park, with Mount Kilimanjaro often visible on clear days beyond it. The dormant volcano draws trekkers seeking a quieter, less-crowded alternative to Kilimanjaro, with the summit climb typically taking three to four days through forest, moorland, and rocky ridgeline.

The park is famous for hosting the world’s largest population of giraffes, alongside herds of Cape buffalo, zebra, warthog, and troops of black-and-white colobus and blue monkeys in its forested areas. The Ngurdoto Crater — a swampy caldera ringed by rainforest and often called Tanzania’s “little Ngorongoro” — and the seven shallow, alkaline Momella Lakes, home to flamingos and abundant waterbirds, round out the park’s three signature landscapes.

Arusha is also one of the few parks in Tanzania’s northern circuit where walking safaris and canoe safaris are allowed, offering a more intimate, on-foot connection to the landscape than a typical game drive.
