Machame Route — 7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb

Price From TBA

Overview

The Whiskey Route — Kilimanjaro's Most Scenic Path to the Roof of Africa

The Machame Route, affectionately nicknamed the “Whiskey Route,” is widely considered the most scenic way to climb Mount Kilimanjaro — and one of the most reliable for reaching the summit. Rather than following a single ridge, Machame winds through five distinct climate zones, from dense montane rainforest through heath, moorland, and alpine desert, to the arctic conditions of the summit itself.

This 7-day mountain itinerary (9 days including your arrival and departure) is built around the “climb high, sleep low” principle: an extra acclimatization day at Barranco Camp, reached via Lava Tower at 4,630 meters, gives your body real time to adjust before the final push. That extra day is the single biggest reason Machame’s 7-day version has a meaningfully higher summit success rate than the rushed 6-day option.

You’ll ascend and descend via different sections of the mountain, tackle the hands-on scramble of the Barranco Wall, and stand on Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters — the highest point in Africa — before descending all the way back through the rainforest to Mweka Gate.

Machame Route elevation profile — 8 camps across 7 days on the mountain, from Machame Gate (1,640m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and back down to Mweka Gate.

Trip Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania (Kilimanjaro International Airport) & Transfer to Arusha Town

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you will be warmly welcomed by your East Africa Sauvage representative and transferred comfortably by road to your hotel in Arusha, where you’ll spend the night before your climb begins.

Take the rest of the day to relax, unpack your climbing gear, and settle in after your flight. In the evening, your lead mountain guide will meet you for a thorough pre-climb briefing — reviewing the route, checking your equipment, answering questions, and making sure you’re fully prepared for the days ahead.

Enjoy a hearty dinner and a good night’s rest, since tomorrow your Machame Route adventure begins in earnest.

After breakfast, you’ll be driven from Arusha to the Machame Gate (1,640m), the starting point of the Machame Route — often called the “Whiskey Route” for its reputation as one of the most scenic and rewarding paths up Kilimanjaro.

Once your permits are processed and the porters have organized the gear, you’ll set off through dense montane rainforest — moss-draped trees, giant ferns, and the chance to spot black-and-white colobus monkeys along the way. The trail is a steady, winding climb through the trees.

After 5 to 7 hours of hiking and roughly 11 kilometers, you’ll reach Machame Camp (2,980–3,000m) at the edge of the forest, where your crew will have your tents set up and a hot dinner waiting.

Camp: Machame Camp (2,980m)

Distance: 11 km  |  Hiking Time: 5–7 hours  |  Habitat: Montane Rainforest

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today the landscape changes dramatically as you leave the rainforest behind and climb into the heath and moorland zone. The trail steepens onto a rocky ridge before opening out onto the vast Shira Plateau — a high-altitude expanse left behind by an ancient collapsed volcano.

Crossing a river gorge, you’ll get your first clear views of Kibo, Kilimanjaro’s summit cone, rising ahead of you. After 4 to 6 hours and around 5 kilometers, you’ll arrive at Shira Camp (3,840m), set on the open plateau with sweeping views back over the plains below.

Dinner and overnight at camp, with noticeably thinner air reminding you just how high you’ve already climbed.

Camp: Shira Camp (3,840m)

Distance: 5 km  |  Hiking Time: 4–6 hours  |  Habitat: Moorland

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today is one of the most important acclimatization days on the mountain, built around the “climb high, sleep low” principle. The trail climbs steadily across semi-desert terrain to Lava Tower (4,630m), an imposing volcanic rock formation, where you’ll stop for lunch.

Rather than camping at this altitude, you then descend into the dramatic Barranco Valley, giving your body the chance to adjust after the higher push. The change in elevation over the day is significant — helping your body produce more red blood cells and adapt to lower oxygen levels, a major reason for the Machame Route’s strong summit success rate.

You’ll arrive at Barranco Camp (3,950m), tucked beneath the towering Barranco Wall, for dinner and an overnight stay.

Camp: Barranco Camp (3,950m)

Distance: ~10 km  |  Hiking Time: 6–7 hours  |  Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The day begins with the Barranco Wall — a steep, hands-on scramble that looks intimidating from camp but is more straightforward than it appears, with no technical climbing skills required. The reward is some of the best panoramic views on the entire route.

From the top of the wall, the trail undulates across a series of valleys and ridges toward Karanga Valley. After 4 to 5 hours and roughly 5 to 9 kilometers, you’ll reach Karanga Camp (4,035m), the last water point before the summit push.

With a shorter day than most, there’s time to rest, hydrate, and mentally prepare for what’s ahead over dinner and an early night.

Camp: Karanga Camp (4,035m)

Distance: 5–9 km  |  Hiking Time: 4–5 hours  |  Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

A shorter, steady climb takes you up onto the exposed Barafu Ridge — barren, rocky, and increasingly cold as the vegetation thins to almost nothing. This is true alpine desert, with Kibo’s summit looming directly ahead.

After 4 to 5 hours and around 4 to 6 kilometers, you’ll reach Barafu Camp (4,673m), your base camp for the summit attempt. The afternoon is for resting, an early dinner, and trying to sleep as best you can — because tonight’s wake-up call comes around midnight.

Your crew will lay out final summit-day preparations: extra layers, headlamps, water, and snacks, all ready to go before you turn in.

Camp: Barafu Camp (4,673m)

Distance: 4–6 km  |  Hiking Time: 4–5 hours  |  Habitat: Alpine Desert

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

This is the night you’ve been training for. Around midnight, you’ll set off by headlamp into the cold, dark air, climbing steadily toward Stella Point (5,756m) on the crater rim, aiming to arrive around dawn for one of the most spectacular sunrises in Africa.

From Stella Point, it’s a final push along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) — the summit of Kilimanjaro and the highest point on the African continent. The thin air and steep, switchback trail make this the most physically and mentally demanding stretch of the entire climb.

After celebrating and taking in the views from the Roof of Africa, you’ll begin the long descent — first back down to Barafu Camp for a hot lunch and rest, then continuing down through changing vegetation zones to Mweka Camp (3,110m). Including the summit push, today typically involves 12 to 16 hours of hiking, making it by far the longest day of the trek.

A well-earned dinner and deep sleep await at Mweka Camp, back in the moorland below the alpine zone.

Camp: Mweka Camp (3,110m)

Distance: ~21 km (ascent + descent)  |  Hiking Time: 12–16 hours  |  Habitat: Arctic Summit to Moorland

Meal Plan: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After a final breakfast at Mweka Camp, you’ll descend through the last stretch of montane forest to Mweka Gate (1,640m) — a hike of about 10 kilometers taking 3 to 5 hours. The vegetation thickens back into rainforest as you lose altitude, and the change in air quality alone tells you how far you’ve come.

At the gate, you’ll sign out with park authorities and receive your official summit certificate — green for those who reached Stella Point, gold for Uhuru Peak. Your driver will be waiting to transfer you back to your hotel in Arusha.

On arrival, enjoy a well-earned hot shower, a proper bed, and time to rest and clean up. Many climbers find this first hotel evening after the mountain one of the most satisfying of the entire trip.

Celebrate your achievement with a relaxed dinner and a comfortable overnight stay, certificate in hand.
